Summary Via Goodreads:

“While Joclyn is trapped in the tormenting hell of Cail’s mind, the battle around her only continues to grow and spread.
Edmund has infiltrated the underground hallways of Prague, guiding the massacre that would end the lives of the last of the great magical race. In her attempts to stop him, Wynifred has been captured and her magic restrained. Chained up in the ancient dungeons of Prague, her fate is left in the hands of her father, who has tried to kill her before.
With Ryland’s screams and Sain’s fragmented sights as her only company, Wyn must rely on something that has been hidden deep inside of her for centuries to help them break free.
Ilyan’s whole life has been building up to one purpose. Protect the Silnỳ. He knows what he must do, and he has no doubt in his ability to do so.
But when his father’s magic removes Joclyn’s mind from her body, he is left protecting the shell of the one person he loves. Desperate to find a way to break her free of her prison, he makes a choice. And that one choice changes everything.
Now, Ilyan finds himself bound to Joclyn in a way that he never knew to be possible.
They say that blood is thicker than water, but Black Water burns, and Ilyan’s heart may not be strong enough to keep it pumping through his veins and give the girl he loves back into his brother’s care.
Even if he can, it may not be safe to do so.

My Review: (5 out of 5 stars)

This was BY FAR, THE BEST THING REBECCA L. ETHINGTON HAS WRITTEN. This was one of the best books I have read all year! THIS WAS MIND-BLOWING, MIND-NUMBINGLY, FANTASTIC. My God, where are you Rebecca i need to kiss you!

Also i would like to mention if you haven’t caught on this is the 3rd in a series, there will be spoilers not only from the first book *i know gasp* but also the second book *double gasp!* so please don’t look at this review unless you don’t care about the happenings of the second book or the first.

Song Choice: “Calgary”, & “Flume” by Bon Iver. “Can’t Help But Falling In Love With You” cover by Ingrid Michaelson (originally by Elvis), “Cinders and Smoke” by Iron&Wine, and lastly i am going to go with “Just Abuse Me” by Air Traffic but this song has a really high upbeat movement that doesn’t quite fit this book, but i still say it.

First Gushings…I mean thoughts…yeah thoughts…psst, screw it, first gushings: OKAY after coming off the last book i was … concerned…about how this book would go. I did NOT read the summary, i DID NOT read even my friend Nellysa’s reivew…though i don’t think she did one…but thanks sweetie for getting me through the second and this one! you are a peach! anyways back to the book. Seriously this was fantastic i loved LOVED LOVED LOVED our “new” perspectives of Wyn and Ilyan, we learn more, and more about them, the stronger both character become, and the more my heart broke for both of them. I like to consider myself pretty freakin’ badass, its hard for a book to get me to cry once, but more than once, well congrats Rebecca you win! The plot was beautiful, the fact that Rebecca was willing to go where other authors in the “young adult” – which i don’t consider this “YA” all that much – anyways she is willing to go there. And boy did she go there! What you need to know is that this takes us back about to half of the second book, and we are learning what Wyn and what Ilyan went through. And we do move forward some in this book but not a whole hell of a lot, but my god i am not shitting you what-so-ever this book is worth reading both the first two books even if you don’t like them, this is worth it. that sounds mean…what i am trying to say is this was the best in the series so far, in my opinion. it was just wow…

Thoughts on Plot: so I already mentioned in first thoughts that it was fantastic, and Rebecca went there. Boy did she go there. Now as i also mentioned this takes us back in about half way through the second book recounting what was happening to Wyn, and what was happening to Ilyan. Here is the thing, while this book is a bit more lacking on the romance aspect it was not lacking on heart break or learning about people’s past, or action. It is fast paced but i had to take breaks to be honest because there is a lot to take in a lot to process. look i am not going to sugar coat this, this was not a happy tale, this was not an easy journey, this was hard, this was painful and this was beautiful both story wise, and writing style. This book was really revolved around the characters as well. Also i forgot say this before. There will be unlikely heroes in this book so don’t be hating too much you might regret your decisions 😉

Thoughts on Characters!

BUT BEFORE I DO THAT! i have a special treat for you usually i don’t do this, but sometimes i have the urge and i did for this so i have castings for you!!!!

Wyn (because legit she became one of my new most favoritest characters ever!):

Kay I am going to start with Wyn as not only because i love her so but because she is the first POV we read in this book so without further ado

Wyn: Now she was a minor character, if that in the last book. In the first book she was the new girl best friend of Jos which she desperately needed but Jos is very closed off and we couldn’t really experience all that Wyn would be because of Jos close-off-ness, this not a jab at her i promise! Anyways moving on. We learn so much more about Wyn, we become so much more attached to her and so more involved with her. I love Wyn for her loving personality and her need to have fun but she is badass, and she is dangerous when she needs to be. We learn so so so much more about Wyn and there is so so so much i cannot say about her because it would be a spoiler but know that she deserves your love, she deserves your support, and she deserves happiness. My heart cried for her. I don’t know how to say much more without giving anything away but know this she is strong beyond belief, she is passionate, she is like i mentioned dangerous, she is a fighter.

Ilyan: If you didn’t fall in love with him in the last book then something might seriously be wrong with you…so you might want to get that checked out. But if you didn’t fall for him then you will fall for him now. He is the most selfless man ever. He like Wyn deserve the world and more. He is a born leader, he is the perfect leader really. And that is not just being nice, he really is. He looks at everything from every side, he tries his damnedest to make everything right. So i need to do quotes for Ilyan.

“I love her more than I have any other. I love her enough that I would rather see her happy than in my possession. My time will come.”

“I wanted to leave her with one beautiful thing.”

“I would wait a thousand more years to experience those sights, but they could come to pass.”

“I love her enough that I would rather see her happy than in my possession.”

one more i swear!

“But as with all right decisions, there was a sacrifice to be made, wrong steps to take first. There always was. Making the right choice was never easy. But making it was required, and it was what I was raised to be. A King, a leader to my people.”

Jos: Welp Jos is still lost in her own mind with Cail for most of the book so at the end when she comes back to us we already know she is pretty much shattered. I loved how she was portrayed, i loved her in this book, she might be scared and she might be broken but she still managed to find the strength to stand up and do the hard stuff.

Ryland: Grrrr we don’t get much of him either, and there isn’t much i can say. So there that is.

The ending! wow that ending! WOW WOW WOW PERFECTION. i need the next one please and thank you!
