Summary via Goodreads:

“Joclyn Despain has been marred by a brand on her skin. She doesn’t know why the mark appeared on her neck, but she doesn’t want anyone to see it, including her best friend Ryland, who knows everything else about her. The scar is the reason she hides herself behind baggy clothes, and won’t let the idea of kissing Ryland enter her mind, no matter how much she wants to.
The scar is the reason she is being hunted.

If only she knew that she was.

If only she had known that the cursed stone her estranged father sent for her 16th birthday would trigger a change in her. Now, she is being stalked by a tall blonde man, and is miraculously throwing her high school bully ten feet in the air.

Joclyn attempts to find some answers and the courage to follow her heart. When Ryland finds her scar; only he knows what it means, and who will kill her because of it.”

My Review: (its actually a 4.75 stars out of 5…so a 5 out of 5)

Really its a 4.5 stars for me. It really is. There are just two little things that bothered me but i will get to those later! (disclaimer, i did NOT give this author a higher rating because her first name happens to be the shit, but just so you know…)

SSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOONNNGGG CHOICE TIME!! Kay i haven’t done this in a while, explaining what this is i mean, i pick a song or two or three, sometimes four, sometimes its overall tone/theme of the book, sometimes it about the relationship between characters, sometimes its just a theme song for a character, sooo lets begin! “Holocene” by Bon Iver (AND I FUDGING LOVE THIS SONG! just btws, Bon Iver is FANTASTIC! soo yup) anyways this song is for the characters in general, I am going to go with “Never Let Me Go” by another favorite of mine Florence and the Machine, “I’m Ready, I am” by The Format, fun fact for you (giggles you will find out in a second why), the lead singer of the Format is now the lead singer in…. Fun. (PUNNNNNSSSS ARE FUNNNN GET IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!) i just really really excited about that, i still am. Anyways! and this last one is for the kids who have already read the book, they might find it QUITE enlightening! “Shankill Butchers” by Sarah Jarosz

First thoughts: okay stop right now. Stop trying to guess what it is because you will always, forever be wrong. After…oh awhile ago (which also i don’t know why i waited so long to read this! silly me!) my friend had read this, and she wrote a review, a very good review by the way, anyways! even she was saying how you should stop trying to guess what it will be because you won’t, its actually quite refreshing, and well researched (sort of….) anyways you won’t ever guess so stop trying and just read this. Now i went into this thinking that it would be a bit of a slower pace book ( i still love you friend! but I didn’t think it was that slow paced) yeah no really, action-action stuff happens in the very beginning but it moves quickly and well, i will go more into that later. Anyways overall this was a very refreshing, interesting, new everything really. I mean yeah some stuff is like well i have seen that before but really you have seen everything even if you don’t think you have, you have, and its what you do with it, and how you execute it and this was fantastic! Really fantastic.

Thoughts on Plot: So the first half really is character driven, what do i mean by that? There is a lot of mystery, and what nots going on, a lot of stuff we don’t know, its that thing that is right around the corner waiting, juuusttt waiting til you have your metaphoric pants down to jump out at you and scare the crap out of you, yeah i just said that….. even i am reeling over that imagine… alright *violently shakes and moves on* The first half not bad at all, not bad at all. actually i quite enjoyed it, it was the second half that i took the longest getting through and that isn’t meant to mean it was boring or anything, quite the opposite but its a lot to take in all at once so its okay to you know walk away from your Kindle (named something i don’t know like Kale – bitches stay away from that name its my kindles name! mine!) or your Nook (named i don’t know Niegel, because apparently Nooks are british now…much makes me want a Nook cause if Nooks are British that most mean they are cool cause Doctor Who is British, simple logic really, or as i like to call it Becca Logic (me, not the author)….i got off track didn’t i? coming back!) So its okay to take a break from reading and get back to your day job do some work, whatever it is that you do at work and then come back to it five minutes later cause if you don’t find out what is happening you will go insane… INNNSANE. πŸ™‚ so alright over all the first half character driven, but in a way that develops the characters for the later scenes in the book where it becomes more plot driven and action-y. I personally thought it was amazing paced, while we were getting a lot of new information all at once, i pretty much kept up with it all and even figured out somethings on my own!! So plot = AWESOME… *i laughs evilly because i didn’t tell you anything about the paranormals in this book BWHAHAHAHAHA*

ohhhh well okay here is one of my little issues, the father (Jos father). soooo we just sort of ignored his second disappearance, like huh? It was just something that stuck with me and i was like are we not going to address this…oh okay…we aren’t…. sounds good…..

Characters:

(and here is the other thing that might have bothered me let me go check it really quick) OKAY I RETRACT my other issue…sorry, just yeah…ignore that… i am sooo yup this can go up to 4.75 stars

Joclyn (Jos): I WAS SHOCKED, I was just reading about at i don’t know 95%ish and i thought to myself wow, we went to the hiding in hoodies, riding a longboard girl to this. While the change wasn’t completely and utterly different she was definitely more i don’t know if that makes sense to you or not but i don’t know to explain it without giving away anything so i won’t sorry just take my word for it. So she is hard to do because obviously this is the beginning of her journey, and i feel like she will be doing a lot of growing so i don’t want you to turn away from this book just because of how Jos acts in this book. At the beginning painfully shy, and sort of self-destructive i just wanted to simultaneously hug and slap her at the same time. While i understood her reasonings behind things i wanted her to break through those issues, but like i said she grew some in this book but i have a feeling she will be growing more. For me she was a sort of likable MC and i liked that because we all have flaws, we all have something about us that someone is going to like, we cannot be that perfect “character” and for me that is what a really fantastic MC is also, she isn’t perfect she has issues and i have just this great feeling about not only this character but the Author as well. (again has nothing to do with her totally awesome name…)

Ryland (Ry): where to start, where to start. W.O.W. (again i am not referring to World of Warcraft, just a really shocked wow) He seriously had to be one of the most self-less MC boys i have ever met ever. He was … wow. Protective to a fault, heart-wrenching-ly beautiful both on the outside and the inside. I wanted so much for him. And i hate myself also because i truly do love him, i do but God freakin dammit i might have fallen in love with someone else….

Ilyan: While he is a bit of a mystery and we don’t actually met him for awhile he is the other one. I went against my normal rule which is to never trust the blonde, in a book, i don’t know why but they always tend to be the evil one, don’t worry there is nothing too bad about Ilyan other than maybe his lying about loving Jos because i am convinced he does, and i hate myself but i love him too, sooo very much. He was sweet, thoughtful, funny, watch out for this one because before you realize it he will be under your skin, and hidden in that deep dark side of your brain, whispering his name over and over until its all you can think about…but maybe not that extreme….maybe.

Villain: wow she went there. Yes Rebecca (awesome name) L. Ethington went there.
The ending, well i think i screamed, it was all a bit hazy….but i think there was screaming involved…. but don’t fret! the second and third ones are out! yay!!! sooo very very last thoughts, why aren’t you reading this book?
