Summary Via Goodreads:
A girl with nothing else to lose.
A life that’s brought nothing but pain.
A tattoo that’s more than what it seems.
Eighteen-year old Veronica has had enough. Her alcoholic mother has only delivered a slew of abusive step-fathers and life is only getting harder. What was to be a simple tattoo for her birthday brings more than she ever imagined.
Liam is a shape-shifting dragon. He lives on her shoulder, watching her, helping her. Having the dragon come to life and teaching her courage becomes a new lifeline for Veronica. But Liam will eventually become a permanent tattoo on her skin – never to take the shape of the protector she became attached to.
Will she embrace her life or will a broken heart shatter her soul forever?
My Review: (3ish out of 5 stars)
head+desk (on repeat) = me right now…. and while reading most of this book, novella, thing.
Okay before I get into the nitty-gritty that is my review. Song choice…. “Satellite Heart” by Anya Marina and “Sweet Dreams” by yes, omgosh she does listen to more than indie music, shocking i know, anyways by Beyonce
So First thoughts: I was extremely excited to start this, why you ask? I FUCKING LOVE DRAGONS, give me all of the dragon shifter books i can get my hands on because i love them! almost as much as i love werewolves, they are getting there trust me but i don’t run across them very often. And if i do they tend to be more fantasy/historical reads as well, and while those are awesome but sometimes i want a modern read with dragon shifters. and the concept of this book was awesome, totally awesome i was super excited to start it. And honestly i was concerned when i noticed on amazon, it was ONLY 69 pages. YUP! that is not one of those times amazon is being cra, its honestly just that short which comes into A HUGE issue with me. ANYWAYS before i get in-depth with first thoughts: it was a short, sort of fun read with real issues. emphasis on SHORT.
Thoughts on Plot/Romance: SSSSSSSSSSSSooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo i knew this was going to move fast because of the fact it was ONLY 69 PAGES LONG, yup i am not letting that one go. SO biggest elephant that needs to be dealt with is obviously the fact that she compares Liam to Ewdward the sparkling vampire, HAHAHA tricked you, you thought it was going to be about its shortness didn’t you! well anyways the point is…seriously COMPARES HOT-ASS, BAD-ASS Dragon shifter to The Sparkling Vampire Wonder…. UGH, mind you i did laugh a little when she said Liam was hotter but still come on! Don’t worry the dragon’s don’t sparkle or anything like that. So now that i got that out of my system. WHHHYYYYYY?!?!?! WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS ONLY 69 PAGES, WHY?! there could have been so much more, this could have been SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH MORE. I was starting to really like the writing style, and the voices of the characters but really the plot/romance/length of this book ruined it for me! i am sorry to say it, but its true!!! The plot while awesome was too condensed, and when real tension started it was defused in the worst possible way, truly i hate saying these things really i do! but there it is. Okay so an example is this one part the MC Ronnie was yelling at this dragon and it was getting really good, the tension was at its breaking point and i was on the edge of my seat literally, and then she just destroys it by saying, “oh hey, why does this happen?” LIKE SERIOUSLY? WHAT.THE.HELL. not okay gah! insert desk for head to fall on. Alright letting that go now….and trust me that is not the only case of that happening.
The Romance: OH GOD. THE BOOK WAS 69 PAGES LONG! I knew i should have expected this, really i do find myself even wondering why i am sooo annoyed/pissed when i knew that this was the only way. If you thought the love between Edward and Bella was sudden and out of the blue, well I got one here that can go head to head with that. they met, he saves her once, and suddenly they were both “falling in love” talk about lust at first sight, i mean lust…oh no that was right. seriously they have less than a day together before they are falling in lloooovvvvvveee, it reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, oh by the way i hated Romeo and Juliet as a romance, as a comedy/satire, it was amazing, so ask me about that later if you want to know what the hell i am talking about. Seriously they don’t know each other and they are “falling min love” no. again it was too short it was trying to do too much in too short of a time. this could have been easily, EASILY over 100 pages let alone 200 if the time was put into it. NOW if this was like a sampler of a book the author was working on, and this was like a condensed version, PLEASE bring it on!! i would love to read it.
in the end lots of good ideas were started but it all sort of fell flat for me because there wasn’t enough time for anything to build and anything that was built up was quickly doused with water, and dirt, and a fire extinguisher, and anything else you can think of that puts out a fire, like an lack of oxygen. THE WORST part is that i am really sadden by this because it could have been so much more in my eyes. oh and if you are wondering they have one sex scene and it was super tame. sorry no offense but it was.
Characters (totally disregarding their suddenly intense love for each other that popped out of their reproductive systems):
Ronnie: See i liked her. While she was bitter about her situation she stuck it out because in the end she loved her mother, and she was respectful of the fact that her mother was her mother. the woman who held in her in own body for 9 months then pushed her out of her own lady parts and god that had to be painful as hell. Anyways but she is careful and she is a bit bitter, and i really liked her. While she says later that she isn’t one to antagonize and try to piss off people that is the total opposite, she is always trying to antagonize and bother, well obviously she did to Ben the villain of the story because she was trying to save her mother from a beating. But I wanted good things to happen for her and i wanted her to have more with Liam but seriously with the way she was raised where her father left and there was a line of bad step-dads trusting/falling in love so quickly totally unbelievable for me. i couldn’t believe it.
Ronnie’s mother: NOT REAL. omgosh you don’t just randomly wake up after 5 years of being an alcoholic, and Ben beating on your kid on a regular basis and decide, YUP now i am going to change. NO, NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! while i am glad that her character wanted to change its not that easy. THE BOOK WAS TO SHORT. god dammit i won’t let that go.
Liam: WWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLL i liked him and i didn’t. I liked him because well he was hot, bad ass and a dragon. He took charge and was scared of nothing. BUTTTTTT here is the thing he is supposed to be this non-feeling dragon, but he feel really hard, really fast for this never caring over 4000 year old dragon, for a seemingly “unremarkable” girl….(which that confused me because Ronnie was like, oh i am not pretty, then a line LITERALLY a line later says that guys stop and stare at her as she walks by….um pretty i think so…stupid…alright letting that one go, only to start this again….THE BOOK WAS TOOOOO WAY TOOO SHORT. there was so much story and not enough words, if that makes sense. )
SO in the end, will i read the next one… probably, why? i am not really sure… i guess i find this story addictive in the sense i want to know what happens next. God i honest to god thing this would have been the most fantastically, beautiful, awesome story only if it was longer. again like i said too much story but not enough words.
